Contemporary tribal masks
In Contemporary Tribal Masks I combine industrial spirit levels into mask-like sculptural objects. By joining two torpedo levels and binding them with sisal rope, functional tools for measurement are transformed into ambiguous faces.
The mirrored forms suggest a quiet shift from instrument to presence, from utility to symbolic object. The sisal rope introduces a handmade, tactile layer that evokes the idea of the tribal, interrupting the industrial logic of the object.
The works explore the tension between mass production and ritual gesture, between precision and spirituality. The spirit level—also known as a “spiritual instrument”—becomes a subtle reference to balance, orientation and inner state.
